Lynley was the daughter of an Irish father and mother of a New England mother. After establishing her career as an actress, she was a model for children. She won the Theatre World Award as "one of the most promising actors in 1956-57" for her performance in The Potting Shed. Lynley began her film career in the year 1958 by appearing in her debut in the Disney film The Light in the Forest. Her next film was Holiday for Lovers (1959) and Blue Denim (1959). She was nominated in 1959 for the Golden Globe Award as Most Promising Female Newcomer Female. One year later, she was nominated again for the Golden Globe Award as Most Promising Female Newcomer Female.
